Preparing for Today’s Job Market – The Interview

Congratulations, you got an interview… now what?! During this workshop we’ll look at what to expect when interviewing at different types of libraries: academic, special, and public. We’ll discuss both remote and in-person interviews, and talk about the importance of doing your research, preparing questions for your interviewers, and showing confidence and personality during your interview. We will talk about, and critique, interview-appropriate attire, as well as give you tips on staying comfortable while looking professional. We will work on developing your elevator pitch, and practice answering the most commonly asked interview questions. And, finally, we will provide advice on how to follow up after the interview. Throughout, we’ll emphasize how to go beyond the qualifications listed on your resume in order to show a potential employer that you are the right candidate for the job.

CDW:
Preparing for Today’s Job Market I – The Job Search

The number one goal for many of us, whether we are fresh out of library school or not, is finding a job. And not just any job — a job that we like, a job that we can grow in and learn from and feel proud of, a job that will enhance our skill sets and propel our careers. But the process of finding a job can be a difficult one and, at times, a long and treacherous journey. This hands-on workshop will help you feel more confident in your job search by giving you the tools to organize a search, analyze job listings, and write effective, compelling cover letters and resumes. We will also discuss the importance of creating, and maintaining, a professional online presence and look at examples of online portfolios and profiles on different platforms. All of which will help get you noticed — in a good way, and get you one step closer to the interview.

Invest in Success
Professional development is not a luxury, it is a necessity for library and information professionals. It is something that we need to plan for; something to build into our careers, our job descriptions, and our roles. Engaging in professional development opportunities helps us develop new skills, form new collaborations, learn about new tools and procedures, and stay motivated and active in a rapidly changing profession. Professional development is an investment in success and an investment in our individual futures which will propel us to the next level or the next stage — whether that is a new job, a new role, a new initiative, a promotion, a career change, or simply a happier state of mind. And, in turn, will benefit our libraries, our institutions, and our communities. Our presentation will focus on simple and painless steps to add professional development into (and charge up) your career.  Presented by: Tiffany Eatman Allen, Director of Library Human Resources at the University of North Carolina and Susanne Markgren, Digital Services Librarian at Purchase College, State University of New York. Tiffany and Susanne are co-authors of Career Q&A: A Librarian’s Real-Life, Practical Guide to Managing a Successful Career.

For our session, we will share data and responses from the survey, as well as provide advice and tips on how to manage a successful career in libraries no matter what stage of your career, and discuss how to transition from one role to another, how to keep yourself motivated and current in a rough job market, and how to find alternative and flexible roles in our evolving profession. And we will save time at the end to answer your career-related questions.
